This week I’m going to address a question that my Mother-In-Law was asking me over Thanksgiving:

“Why do my apps disappear?”

That’s a very good question that I had to do a little digging to understand better.

First a disclaimer:

Android phones are open source technology, meaning, depending on the type of Android phone you have (Samsung, Sony, Motorola, etc.) your system settings may be different than described herein.

Okay, now to business.

I’m working with a Samsung Galaxy J3 (el-cheapo) phone.  I’m going to assume most Samsung phones operate in a similar manner.

So why do your apps disappear?  There could be a couple of reasons according to Mitch Bartlett in his post about Android: Icons Disappear from Home or Launcher (https://www.technipages.com/android-icons-disappear-from-home-screen) posted October 29, 2017.

Step 1 – Restart Your Smartphone

First thing is to restart your phone.  I know, we all forget to do this all-important task.  Really, you should restart your phone at least once a week (I do mine every Sunday night before bed), this helps clear out any gunk that has built up in the memory.

To restart your Android Smartphone: push and hold down your power button found on the right side of the phone.  A screen will pop up asking you to “power off” or “restart.”  You can do either, but I’d say just to choose “restart” this time.

Once your phone restarts, and if this worked, your apps should reappear.  If they don’t, then try the “power off” option.  Remember you have to press and hold the power button again to get your phone to turn on again.

Step 2 – Check to see if your Apps are “Disabled”

If your apps are still not showing up, you need to check to see if they’ve been disabled.

Settings >> Apps >> All Apps >> Disabled

If you still don’t see your app, it may have been deleted.  To reinstall your app, you will need to visit the Google Play Store

Step 3 – Visit the Google Play Store

The GooglGoogle Play Storee Play Store is where you can purchase (for $ or free) the apps that you use on your phone.  When an app that you’ve been using disappears, sometimes it’s a glitch in the operating system (OS) and there is not an easy explanation unless your a programmer, which neither of us are.  So my suggestion is to just go and find your app again at the Google Play Store, re-download it and hope it doesn’t go missing again.

If this is a recurring  problem visit your local cell phone store and see if they can help.  Sometimes a full system reset is needed, but please do that under the guidance of someone who knows what they’re doing.

Yes I would try the same procedure. If that doesn’t work, let me know and I’ll check it out for you.
